how are courtesans chosen to be the empress of ancient china?
please help me with this one.. i’m trying to write a fictional story..
It was pretty much unheard of for a courtesan to become an empress. What did happen from time to time is that an emperor’s concubine became powerful enough to be ruler in fact – usually this was because her son became Emperor but was too young, or sometimes too stupid, to actually govern, so the mother became de facto ruler. The most famous examples are Empress Wu in the Tang dynasty and the Dowager Empress of the late Qing period.
Some concubines gained substantial power because they were favored by their emperors, but I think the degree to which they had real power tended to be exaggerated by Confucian historians, who wrote the official histories of the Chinese courts, were always hostile to women having any kind of power, and loved to blame women for the failure of emperors.
